Clarendon Slab Serif typefaces are
a subgroup of Egyptian Slab Serifs. They all have heavy blocky serifs but unlike Egyptian, Clarendon's
slab serifs do have bracketing.
These typefaces have some contrast in the size of the serifs and can be very decorative and do well as eye-catching display types.
Clarendon Slab Serif typefaces began in the 19th century.
Clarendon is an English slab-serif typeface that became the model for other types in this classification. It was created in the 1840s by Englishman Robert Besley. Due to its popularity, Besley registered it under Britain's Ornamental Designs Act of 1842 and it is now considered the first registered typeface.
